Contrast Calculator

For maximum readability, ADA guidelines require that copy characters contrast with their background by at least 70%. The contrast calculator may be used to assure accordance with this directive.

Choose a copy color to the selection left. Choose a laminate (background) from the selection at right. A contrast value will appear at center in conjunction with a or an indicating a contrast level in accordance with or in violation of the guideline.

Contrast = [(Y1-Y2)/Y1] x 100

Where Y1 = light reflectance value (LRV) of the lighter area and Y2 = light reflectance value (LRV) of the darker area.
