PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
M&T Tech Hub
Buffalo tech sector's high-rise boost
Takeform helps M&T Bank translate high concept into fresh vibe

High-tech attitude. Dynamic floor plans. Vibrant décor. A landmark Buffalo, N.Y., skyscraper found a new purpose thanks to M&T Bank, whose $58 million investment created the M&T Bank Tech Hub (#MTBTechHub) at Seneca One. In partnership with developer Douglas Jemal and LeChase Construction, the financial institution set out to make 13 floors of Seneca One a crown jewel of the Buffalo Niagara region's tech sector. Home to 1,500 of the bank's employees, the Tech Hub will also live up to its name as a gathering place for innovation. It's part of a strategy to make the region more competitive with tech-heavy metros and attract top talent.

So long, cube farm.
From the moment the first plans were drawn up, the vision for Tech Hub was an open, collaborative space. One where colleagues would share clustered workstations and gather informally to keep their problem-solving perspective fresh. There would be space to invite bank customers into, where they could try out products and services live—and be observed. There'd be an arcade where employees could relax and socialize, surrounded by creative energy. And an entire floor dedicated to a Tech Academy where professionals could master new skills.

Takeform advised the client on how best to dial in the color palette and {bracket} theme to bring the space to life.

Takeform as interpreter.
While M&T Bank was already a long-term client, this project called for a departure from the bank's established corporate standards. The bank's design firm had initiated a bold, exciting graphic direction for the space. And Takeform served as an intermediary partner who could interpret the vision and solve the unique puzzles of the space for the client—all while bringing the needed technical expertise to the table, such as code compliance.

Custom-designed mounting hardware evokes the modern, post-industrial vibe of the space.

Takeform created a portable, magnetic workstation ID to integrate with sit/stand workstations and to keep pace with colleagues on the move in this agile work environment.
"Takeform clients and their design firms may have great drawings, a great vision, but they look to us to translate them into a complete system, with all of the considerations we're well versed in."
- Anthony Fearby, Director, Project Management at Takeform
Running with the vision.
After a kickoff meeting with the design firm, Takeform began to build renderings for an entire signage system inspired by the Tech Hub's core style guide, which centered on the use of computer code {brackets} to call out key words and iconography.

As people enter the building's lobby, they get an immediate introduction to the Tech Hub design language.

The {bracket} graphic ties the signage system together throughout the Tech Hub, including on elevator doors.

Binary code creates texture with a high-tech connotation on the 23rd floor's Tech Academy.
From there, a complex signage system began to take shape. Along the way, Takeform often demonstrated its valuable combination of design intuition and technical know-how. Applying color. Engineering custom mountings. Understanding code compliance. It all added up to an energized space true to the original vision—and executed by a team adept at figuring out complex challenges along the way.
