PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
Bent's Opera House
Bringing cosmopolitan sophistication to a historic rural landmark.
At its opening in 1865, Bent's Opera House (Bent's) was a mixed-use destination ahead of its time. The three-story Medina Sandstone building offered three first-level storefronts, offices on the second, and its show-piece opera house on the third.

Recognized as a performance destination of national significance – Bent's hosted hundreds of entertainers, speakers, and celebrities that were typically only associated with big-city venues – among which were notables such as P.T Barnum and Buffalo Bill (pictured left).
After enjoying several decades of success, the growing preference for motion pictures and other entertainment saw Bent's fall into disuse and increasing disrepair throughout the twentieth century. But this historic destination was not forgotten – in 1995, Bent's was recognized as a contributing property to Medina's Main Street Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2010, Bent's was donated to Orleans Renaissance Group, Inc. to facilitate the landmark's restoration to its former glory. To that end, Talis Equity later took ownership and orchestrated extensive repairs, renovation, and a complete reimagining of the historic site's place in twenty-first-century Medina. Opening in 2021, Bent's is now home to a world-class restaurant, a unique boutique hotel, and an elegant event venue.
Signs of two times.
History reborn in Medina, NY – Bent's tagline clearly illustrates the value placed on its distinct heritage. But at the same time, every detail of the new Bent's experience is finely-tuned to satisfy the sensibilities of today's discerning patrons. From its refined locally-sustainable dining experience to its dramatically-themed modern guest rooms to its exquisite opera house turned event center. Every detail is a perfectly balanced blend of yesterday and today.
Bent's mix of historical and contemporary inspirations defined the sign system challenge: it too must play a dual role by paying homage to the rich history while feeling decidedly today.

The sign design system includes a historic theater photo that conveys Bent's legacy as a performance hall. The stylish ADA font is a modern take on an appropriately retro typeface. And the Interior Arts 1003 BRU Brushed Slate finish is perfectly comfortable in both the past and the present.

Artwork, imagery, fonts, and finishes conspire to create a nuanced sign system that celebrates Bent's history with a fresh complimentary style. The primary architectural detail from the building's facade inspired the sign system's "fan" motif.

Dramatic dimensional lettering creates directional signage that adds touches of upscale sophistication in corridor intersections throughout. Additional elegant touches, such as branded window films, add refined detail to lounge areas and common spaces.

With its Michelin Star head chef, Harvest restaurant at Bent's is a farm-to-table dining destination with world-class standards. Menu, service, and ambiance create an exceptional experience. Ethos expresses the Harvest identity as a monochrome dimensional logo for a sleek minimalist presence. Dusted Crystal Amplify window film creates the elegant look of frosted glass and the Harvest brand is applied in matte black Ethos vinyl.

A modern hospitality brand inspired by the past.
Bent's Opera House has taken on a new life as a destination that combines history with contemporary luxury, beauty, and culinary excellence. Modern elegance is housed within a masterfully-restored architectural experience.

Playing our part
In such a unique space, signage and experiential graphics have a critical supporting role in enhancing the experience through aesthetic finesse. Quality materials and refined construction accentuate the design intent and help extend Bent's brand throughout.

The story of each themed guest room is told through room description signs as shown in this rendering.
