A better paint process:

1. An etching primer is applied. Its etching properties enable the primer to "bite into" the aluminum.

2. The base coat or color coat is applied.

3. The clear coat is applied. The clear coat, with UV stabilizers extends the life of the paint while also protecting against scratches. Scratches go into the clear coat, not the color where they can be buffed and removed.
